Change Windows Registered Owner Name

Here’s a quick little tip that solves a problem we are often asked, and applies to all versions of Windows from XP to 7

If you have bought or been given a PC second-hand,it is more than likely that the registered owner name isn’t yours and you would really like it to be.

If you don’t want the hassle of re-installing Windows just to change the name, and don’t mind dabling in the registry then the solution is simple.

Firstly, open up the registry editor using one of the methods below

Windows XP
Click the ‘Start’ button, and select ‘Run’
In the dialog box type regedit.exe and click ‘OK

Windows Vista / Windows 7
Click the Windows button
In the search box type regedit.exe and click ‘OK

Navigate to the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion

In the right hand pane you will see the keys marked RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization, double click either or both of these keys to change them to your desired setting.

Exit the registry, saving your changes and your registered name is now changed.

If you want to check your changes have been applied, use the instructions for running the registry editor as above, but instead type winver.exe and you will be presented with a dialog box showing your new name.
