Changing The Outlook Email Received Sound

A question we’re often asked is “How do I change the sound the Outlook plays when I get a new E-mail? I’ve looked in the options for Outlook but it’s no where to be seen.”

You can’t find this option in Outlook because it’s not there, but it is easy to change, as it’s actually a part of the Windows settings, not Outlook itself.

Firstly before you follow any of these instructions, make sure that you have closed any instances of Outlook you have running.

Windows 2000
  • In the Control Panel, double-click the Sounds and Multimedia Icon.
  • On the Sounds tab, select ‘Sound Events’, then under the ‘Windows’ option, select ‘New Mail Notification’.
  • Click the Browse button, select your desired .wav file and Click OK.

When you next run Outlook your new sound will play

Windows XP
  • In the Control Panel, double click the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices icon
  • Select Sounds and Audio Devices, and click the Sounds tab.
  • Select the Program Events option, and under the Windows menu, select New Mail Notification.
  • Click the Browse button, select your desired .wav file and Click OK.

When you next run Outlook your new sound will play
