One of the most basic tasks that most users will need to accomplish is creating a new document. In Microsoft Word 2010 there are three basic methods for achieving this:
- Creating a new blank document.
- Creating a new document based on an existing document.
- Creating a document from a template file.
We will deal with these in order
Creating a new blank document.
This is the quickest and easiest way for you to be able to start a document and get typing.
- Open the File tab
- Click ‘New’
- Select the ‘Blank Document’ option.

Creating a document based on an existing document
If you have an already created document that you want to use as a basis for your new document, maybe because all the styles are already set or it has some graphics in it that you want to keep, this option is quite handy.
- Open the File tab.
- Click ‘New’
- Click the ‘New from existing’ option.
- Browse to the document you want to use.
- Click ‘Open’

Creating a document from a template
If nice design is not a strong point of yours then document templates can be your friend here. There are quite a few built in document templates in Word, and you will also be presented with an option to access more from the Microsoft Office website if you are online.
- Open the File tab
- Click ‘New’
- Click ‘Sample Templates’
- Choose a template and double click to open it.
